Endowments & Scholarships

- Scholarship Endowment

Endowing a scholarship through the YSU Foundation provides a student each year the opportunity to get a college education to better their futures. This gift not only has a current impact on a student but provides students year after year in perpetuity with monies to offset their tuition. Youngstown State University does not want its students to graduate with major loans to be paid. YSU Foundation scholarship endowments allow our students to graduate with little or no debt.

YSU Foundation scholarship endowments enable Youngstown State University to recruit and retain students from the region, the entire United States, and the world. Because the criteria for a student to receive a scholarship is designed by the donor, students with diverse goals and backgrounds are and can be awarded scholarships.

- Scholarship Endowment Basics

A scholarship is endowed with a charitable gift of $10,000 or more through pledges, gifts of shares, or estate plans. Gifts of shares of stocks, bonds, or mutual funds can allow donors to avoid income and capital gains taxes. Scholarship endowments can be named to provide a lasting legacy in honor or memory of the donor, spouse, family member, friend, or any loved one. Scholarships are awarded based on eligibility requirements created by the donor.

Four percent of the endowment is used each year for the scholarship which allows the gift to have the opportunity to continue to grow and become more substantial in perpetuity.

    Examples:

  • A $25,000 endowment provides a $1,000 annual scholarship forever.
  • A $100,000 endowment provides a $4,000 annual scholarship forever.

If you were interested in establishing an endowed scholarship please contact one of our development officers.

Gifts of Securities

Funding philanthropic gifts through the transfer of stocks, bonds or mutual funds has become a preferred giving method for charitable donations. By means of gifting securities, the donor realizes a tax deduction of the full market value on day of receipt of security and avoids capital gains and income taxes.

Call your broker or trust officer, and ask them to make an electronic transfer (DTC) of shares from your portfolio to the Youngstown State University Foundation as follows:

Prior to transferring securities, please inform the YSU Foundation by telephone or e-mail of:

  • Name of security
  • Type of security (common stock, preferred stock, mutual fund, bond)
  • Number of shares, or units, to be gifted
  • Approximate date of gift
  • Broker name, telephone number and broker DTC number where transfer is originated

Physical certificates: Please give to your YSU Foundation Development Officer, who will follow the gift transfer process.

As soon as your gift has been completed, the Youngstown State University Foundation will send you an acknowledgment letter and tax receipt for your gift. Additional contributions can be made to increase the value of the endowment while increasing the scholarship award.

If you would like to make a gift of securities or had any questions about them please contact Diane Playforth.
